It was produced with a customized version of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model (WRFv3.2.1), optimized for the model domain and including improvements designed to improve the model's accuracy in representing the Arctic environment. The WRF model data assimilation system (WRFDA) was used to assimilate highly quality-controlled observational data collected across the region via the 3D variational technique. The model outputs represent hourly results at ~10 km spatial resolution with the goal to more accurately capture the finer scale processes of the region's surface wind field (10 meter height) covering the Chukchi, Beaufort, and northern Bering Seas.
